چکیده

In this series a very large therapeutic dose of corticosteroid was administered by retention enemata. For the first week the author gave the equivalent of between 300 and 750 mg. of cortisone daily and for the next three weeks 150 to 375 mg. daily. The results were excellent but systemic effects were noted in all who received more than the smallest dose used.

Urinary Excretion of Prednisolone after Intrarectal Therapy in Ulcerative Colitis.

Treatment of ulcerative colitis with betamethasone phosphate enemas was found to cause suppression of the adrenal cortex, so that absorption of betamethasone from the rectum can be inferred; no suppression occurred in similar patients treated with prednisolone phosphate enemas (Matts, Wharton, Kelleher, and Walters, 1963). In order to determine whether any rectal absorption of prednisolone does...

Modified technique for administration of retention enemata in colitis.

In 1956, Truelove introduced the successful topical corticosteroid treatment for ulcerative colitis, using a modified blood transfusion set. To simplify the technique Matts (1960) introduced disposable plastic enema bags. We have extensively used both these methods. The modified blood transfusion set is better suited to inpatient than to out-patient treatment. The disposable bags, while simpler...

Effect of prednisolone on prostaglandin synthesis by rectal mucosa in ulcerative colitis: investigation by laminar flow bioassay and radioimmunoassay.

The effect of two concentrations of prednisolone on synthesis of prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) by 40 rectal biopsies in organ culture was investigated using both laminar flow bioassay and radioimmunoassay (RIA). Prednisolone (concentration 8.33 x 10(-7)M) reduced mean synthesis of PGE2 to 36.4% of control values (measured by bioassay) or 26.2% of control values (measured by RIA). With prednisolone (c...

Limb Loss Caused by Thrombosis led to the Diagnosis of Ulcerative Colitis

Arterial thrombosis associated with ulcerative colitis usually occurs in the postoperative period with a good response to anticoagulant therapy and embolectomy. Our patient was a 14-year-old girl with ulcerative colitis who presented with bilateral pulsless extremities, which did not respond to medical treatment and embolectomy. Subsequent colectomy did not save her limbs. The repeated thrombos...

Serum Interleukin-23 Levels in Patients with Ulcerative Colitis

Background: Patients with ulcerative colitis are at increased risk of inflammation. Interleukin 23 (IL-23) is a newly identified cytokine with increased expression in inflamed biopsies of colon mucosa in patients with Crohn's disease; however, there is inconsistent evidence on its role in ulcerative colitis. Objective: We aimed to compare serum IL-23 level in patients with ulcerative colitis an...
